What would you say if I said I could offer you reduced lines, firmer skin, and a magic eraser to rub out a lifetime of sun damage accrued on the Cote d'Azur, Blackpool and California?
Yes? Me too.
When Philips offered me the chance to trial the ReAura laser for 8 weeks I bit off their hand like a ravenous Doberman.
I hope to emerge rejuvenated after 8 weeks: a very post modern brunette version of Ayesha from Rider Haggard's She; bathed in the magical Pillar of Life's fire.
Forgive the cliche, but here comes the science on the first at home laser based on Fraxel technology :
“The Philips product is a second generation device which has been demonstrated to be safe and effective”, said Dr Christopher Zachary, Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of California, Irvine. “It has a sophisticated high speed scanner, similar to the Fraxel line of lasers, and was assessed in an 80 patient study to treat the full face, neck, chest and arms. Patients were instructed to use the Philips laser twice a week for 8-12 weeks”. Immediate side effects included some redness and slight swelling which lasted about 1-2 days. About 50% patients noticed an improvement after one week, and over 90% at week 8. There was statistically significant improvement in all study categories (including overall appearance, fine lines, pigmentation – age/sun spots, texture, firmness and radiance) at one week and four weeks after completing the course of treatment. “It is likely that patients might have to undergo a periodic maintenance treatment, as with any skin rejuvenating regime.”
I had a telephone consultation to establish whether or not I was a suitable candidate and Philips offer online support and a telephone helpline for users.
So as not to bore the pantaloons off all of you I shall report back after my 8th treatment and then my 16th.
Now then, my baseline is pretty good for a 47 and a half year old woman. Even though I have spent a large part of my life abroad, I have worn sunblock on my face every day since I was 21, so I really have no sun damage at all. I have dynamic lines but no static ones yet. I do however have the curse of my genetic background namely broken capillaries around my nose and cheeks as pink as one of those creepy Victorian china dolls - alas the ReAura does not treat this problem so I had best just keep my ringlets and petticoats to a minimum. In addition I have the first signs of crepiness on my neck (it doesn't show up in the i phone pics but I'll try to get someone to take a pic ) and the usual volume loss along my jawline and nasolabials associated with nearing my 50th year. It will be interesting to see if the fibroblast/collagen stimulation brings improvement to those areas.
*My intention was to use this to firm up my jawline and to improve my crepey neck and hands but see note below about my skeletal mitts.
Brace yourselves, I come from Nordic people, without a tan, we are as pink as a slice of Spam.
The first signs of jowldom.
1. Does it hurt?
No, not really, it feels like a prickle from a very languid honeybee's butt but after a little while my skin felt very hot, like mild sunburn.
2. How do you look after a treatment?
As if I had placed my face on a griddle pan for 5 minutes. Do not plan on going out. All was well by the next morning though a little tender on my neck,
3. Where do I buy this magic elixir?
It is UK only at the moment, and available for the pretty sum of £799
solely from Space NK.
4. Where else can it be used?
The hands, decollete, forearms.
My hands however are tendonous bags of skin and proved too bonio for the device to traverse, it was like trying to drive a three wheeled Robin Reliant over the back of the Loch Ness Monster.
So far my one bug bear is that it takes so long to do. I was bored out of my mind waiting on the "ta da dah!" fanfare which the laser emits once a zone is completed but trust me I am not known for my patience.
For those wanting to see what it can do for photo damage, check out
Lila's blog, she has had incredible results.
I had wanted to show evidence of that Blackpool holiday, but I am too lazy to go up to the attic to haul out old photos. My sunburn was so bad we had to call the doctor and I spent three days lying in a B&B on my tummy covered in calamine lotion. Of course I still managed to eat my weight in false teeth, pink dummy tits and rock.
If you aren't from Blighty that last line may have blown your mind.
Oh for this edition.

No way do you look your age Tabs! I can't wait to hear what you think when the course has finished. I wish this sort of thing could do its magic while we sleep,(that's how lazy-ass I am!) You have such purrrty blue eyes, liddle Missy...I'm going to laminate those photos so that I can lick them when they go on my prison cell wall..Dummy Tits!!! Haven't heard that one in years..brilliant!
ReplyDeleteJust don't let anyone else lick it, I'll get pink eye!
DeleteFascinating. It will be interesting to see how this works out for you, but you're totally adorable as you are right now!
ReplyDeleteSo jealous - you have no lines! Curse all those hours of tanning (with babyoil no less) I've done through the years...it seemed such a good idea at the time.
ReplyDeleteOh believe me I used coconut oil, I tanned myself silly, only my face escaped, all hail sunblock.
DeleteYou look fabulous for 47.5, my dear. I am interested to see how this works out for you. Dummy tits....hahahaha oh I had a good laugh over that one!
ReplyDeleteI have a scar by my right eyebrow from when I fell down the stairs when I was 3 years old....it's there for life but it's only noticeable when someone is standing close to me.
We both could be wearing sexy patches.
DeleteI was on my mum's lap before seat belts.
I'm confused honey, What is the problem. I know your not doing this because you are already very beautiful! But to answer your question- "What would you say if I said I could offer you reduced lines, firmer skin, and a magic eraser to rub out a lifetime of sun damage ...."? I'm your bitch, what can I do for you first!!! Bourbon or pearls?
ReplyDeleteI'm not greedy - both!
DeleteOh my goodness, Tabitha! You are aging magnificently! What beautiful skin you have! The years have been very kind to you. Me? Well, at 44 the sun damage is really popping out now. I need to get my hands on this hot little number. I love my Clarisonic (which I use religiously) but the ReAura -- now there's something that looks like it would really make a difference. I cannot wait to see your progress pictures.
ReplyDeleteOh my hands and neck are wretched.
DeleteI want this! I am just now 55 and finally made a dermo appointment to see what can be done for my brown spots and crepey skin. Probable answer: not much! Well, brown spots yes, crepey skin maybe not. I do nag my teenage daughters relentlessly about sunscreen, they will thank me when they are 55, if I'm still alive!
ReplyDeleteReally interested to see how this works for you.....I'd love to resurface my neck & décolletage for sure.
Jill Ann, my neck is crepey and all of the skin on my body, I've been a sun worshipper for years, surprisingly I go quite brown and I loved having a tan.
DeleteWow, Tabitha. This is your reward for living in Scotland. Australia is very, very harsh on one's skin. I can never even hope to look like you at 47. I see no lines. Sheesh.
ReplyDeleteTracy.
Oh we spent 11 weeks abroad every year, the difference between my face and body shows the value of sunblock and big hats.
DeleteYour skin is perfect! So obvious that you haven't grown up in Oz sunbaking your head off and smoking. Often at the same time.
ReplyDeleteJust got the Baby from the Orphange. Can't stop singing it's a Hardknock life from Annie.
Stay wrinkle free xxx
Oh I spent very single summer abroad and tanned like a lunatic. The skin on my arms and legs is much much older, but luckily I always wore sunblock on my face.
DeleteThe Orphanage - hilarious!
Hello Tabitha
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this with us. You look beautiful and in my opinion your skin is perfect as is. Please be careful and do not irritate your beautiful skin. Your sunburn from Blackpool sounds painful and I smiled at your mention of the sweets we used eat, I had forgotten about the false teeth candies and the pink dummy tits he hee
Helen, I tried to find a pic of those sugary false teeth to link to but couldn't find them anywhere, I loved all of that junk.
DeleteTabitha, We got an allowance on Sunday only and those sweets were very special. Lucky lumps, sugar barley, fizz bags and marshmallow mice were favs too. Have a great weekend
DeleteYour analogies keep me on my toes, lovely lady! And your face is gorgeous. What a wonderful sneak peak into your life.
ReplyDeleteIt will be very interesting to see the after photos, although your skin looks perfect already. Here's hoping it is not the second immersion into the Spirit of Life.
ReplyDeleteThe Australian sun is so cruel on the celtic complexion.
I second SK's comments - purrrty blue eyes!
Of course I have spent my life wanting brown puppy eyes.
DeleteSame here! I've also spent a lot of time yearning for lightly tanned, beautiful skin.
DeleteI'm agreeing with everyone else - the before shots are so good, I can't imagine the afters being an improvement! I have worn sunscreen every day since I was 15 years old, worn a hat and not tanned. I am now 37, and due to the Australian Sun, my skin is no where near as good as yours. Although interestingly at my recent School reunion I had no less than 5 girls accuse me of having botox (I had to demonstrate I could wrinkle my forehead to disprove it). Guess there was some benefit, but if only I had the Scottish sun instead, I'd be baby faced indeed! That laser crew need to start selling into Australia - there is a large market over here.
ReplyDeleteHeidi : I've always tanned my body and my skin is wrecked everywhere else.
DeleteYour sun must be relentless, we had a house in France and a place in California and lived in South Africa so I have oodles of sun damage!
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteYemamaya: I'd love a strong jaw, you see we always want what we don't have.
ReplyDeleteHeidi: I think my befores are just confusing everyone, I'll probably take them down.
My neck is crepey but it won't show on my I phone.
I had also wanted to do my hands which are crept too but they're too bony.
And I'm interested to see if it will firm my jawline.
No you don't. At least not a Slavic one. Trust me. We use it to plough the fields when no other tool is available. See? We bred for efficiency, not beauty...
DeleteWhoops. sorry for deletion. Not that it was worth keeping anyhow.
DeleteBrave woman! I shall watch with fascination mixed with nerves from afar!
ReplyDeleteAh the Fassbender Forehead! I, too, have the Fassbender forehead and it is a curse! So sexy on him, souch a trial for me!
Have a great weekend!
wendy
Well you will have to explain what that last line means when I see you--in the meantime, I am so jealous of your home laser...why are we so behind in technology that actually matters here?!
ReplyDeletexo Mary Jo
Mary Jo- we are America's guinea pigs, that's why!
ReplyDeleteOh you lucky woman! I would absolutely love to get my hands on one of these home lasers! I do look forward to hearing what you think about it after your 8-week trial. If it does work I may just have to find a way to get one for myself. :)
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely weekend Tabitha!
Wow it sounds amazing! I wish I could have it. I wouldn´t mind to look like Amy Adams, ha,ha Have a lovely weekend <3<3
ReplyDeleteIt is Just amazing. Just give a good try.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had that thing for an annoying brown spot I have on my face. I wear loads of sunscreen now but I didn't always, I'll be paying for that I'm sure.
ReplyDeleteI think your skin looks perfect.
Dani, it seems really good for brown spots, that's one thing I've escaped.
DeleteIt's hard to imagine what improvement could be made to your beautiful face! I'll watch with great interest as you update us. I see the laser is only available in the UK and Ireland. Very lucky to be able to try it!
ReplyDeleteI wish it would have worked on my hands but I don't have enough fat there.
DeleteI hope it works on my crepy neck.
Nearing your 50th decade, you say?! Wow, you look amazing for almost 500! What's your secret? LOL
ReplyDeleteHa! Thanks for being my editor! Yes, I'm a vampire.
DeleteIf anyone could look fabulous at 500, it would be you Tabitha!. ;^)
DeleteI spent my childhood (or a large part of it) in South Africa and burnt to a frazzle as a child - its wierd i tan really well too now - i dont use the sunblock - allergic to the chemicals - and i try to stay out but at the same time love a tan - i think i will be the old brown bag at the end of this decade! I hear argan oil fades spots and lines so relying on that - relying on it a lot i think - i see it comes with creams or something do you have to use them too?? xx
ReplyDeleteI was a kiddie in South Africa too! I just missed being born there.
DeleteYes there's a gel to use beforehand and a soothing cream to put afterwards.
first photo look so stunning
ReplyDeleteI've had a yearly Fraxel at my dermatologist's once a year for about the last 7 years. They've been amazing for me. Resurfaced my skin, and boosted the collagen underneath. I would like to do my whole body. I'm almost 60!
ReplyDeleteKathy, is Fraxel pretty heavy going? Does it tighten skin?
DeleteIt can be, it depends on how high the dermatologist turns it up. Yes it does tighten your skin and reduce pore size. They put a numbing cream on you first, and ice packs afterwards. You look red and swollen for a day, and then you're fine. Basically the laser you're testing is a lightweight Fraxel. I think it looks amazing.
Deletehi tabitha,
ReplyDeletemy sister did the fraxel at her dermatologist and didn't get great results. but honestly her skin was and is in pretty bad condition to start with. can't wait to see what you come up with. i can only imagine how boring it is to do to yourself. and you are right, the last line did blow my mind.
xo
janet
Janet, Blackpool was the home of sweetie rock and sugary treats shaped like false teeth - I know - crazy.
DeleteHello Tabitha:
ReplyDeleteIt is mind blowing what shapes they create out of rock in Blackpool!!Such a good job that we are not overfond of sweet things, just the thought of putting these objects in the mouth is frightening.......not so for a five year old, though. Nothing frightens them!!!
Your new machine looks terrifying, but if it produces results, well, no doubt you will create more of a rush to the shops than Delia Smith when she made her pronouncement about Malvern salt flakes!!
Tabitha, I just visited over at Lola's website. The lighting on her after pictures is almost glaring compared with her before photos, so I'm not certain I trust the results, but I'll cross my fingers for you! I alternated between using sunscreen and frying in the summers for 3/4 of my life, so I'm sure I look every bit my age. Then again, I can't say I'm terribly worried about that. Anyhow, I hope you get what you're wanting.
ReplyDeleteShelley & The Hattats: I'll try anything once!
ReplyDeleteI checked out Lila's blog and her results were fab. Your skin looks amazing but I do understand wanting to get ahead of the age issues--lip lines and jowls! I know we all age, but when it all starts to slide at once it is so distressing! I will never do a surgical procedure--too extreme for all the purported precision. But this tool sounds just right; a gentle, subtle erasing of the damage.
ReplyDeleteSo cool this at-home version! You'd better not disclose your home location EVER--you'll have us all beating down your door for treatments! Meanwhile I think it is time for a visit to my derm to talk lasers!
Bloody hell, you look 16!!
ReplyDeleteI thought there were photographic images here, but my personal computer has done a runabout and I don't see them now.
Let's bring back Space Hotties!
I'm abso-pathetic-lutely drunk at the moment.
LBF: Why are you drunk at er, what time is there anyway? Have you pulled an all nighter?
ReplyDeleteOh I took the other pics down, too confusing as those areas are pretty fine as they are and there wouldn't be any noticeable difference.
Dannie: I thought so too, it really seemed to make a big difference. Oh jowls - every time I look at my mum I see my inheritance !
If it works, send one my way. :D I am usually very skeptical of all the promises made.
ReplyDeleteOf course I think you look marvelous just as you are but I do understand everyone has their own ideas of betterment. Will be curious to see how you fare as I suspect you and I are of the same blue/white hue.
ReplyDeleteI pretty much like looking old; the last frontier where one can be transgressive. Those big ol' doll faces are so characterless. In one's forties, though, all this seems of urgent importance, so I hope you get the results you seek.
ReplyDeleteYour skin looks gorgeous. I can only dream of having skin that good! I have fine lines cropping up everywhere, it's a curse of having to live where the climate is very harsh. I would kill to get my hands on this Phillips laser and try it out, it sounds like it could be effective. Looking forward to your review!!
ReplyDeleteI laughed out loud at least 3 times while reading this. Sort of awkward since I'm currently travelling on a train and had to immediately smother said laughs!
ReplyDeleteNote: The laughing had nothing to do with the laser treatment, just your funny descriptions!
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha, there are no signs of 'jowldom'
ReplyDeleteSpeechless.
ReplyDeleteGORGEOUS... LOVE the first pic :)
ReplyDeletewww.coffeecreamandthecaffeine.blogspot.com
I live in Texas and do like the look of a tan during the summer - very slimming. Like you, I haven't tanned on my face since I was in my '20s, and I am SO GLAD. For those of you living in a (ahem) cooler climate, I would suggest using one of these self-tanners that I swear will not leave you looking orange: Bare Minerals Faux Tan (the liquid version that lasts for days, not the powder version) or St. Tropez. Those are the only two products that I will use to get that nice tan effect, or to even out a slightly-less-than-perfect "real" tan. Yes, you can have your tan sprayed on professionally, but these products are a little easier to access. And I'm not affiliated with either company. If we self-tan and use that laser...we will all look gorgeous well into our '80s!
ReplyDeleteOH that Bare MIneral Faux Tan product has been noted, I'll be trying that out asap damn Yankee, thanks for that. I'm a sucker for tanning, I'm not as bad as I was but I still slip every year.
DeleteHang on, Blackpool? BLACKPOOL??
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to hearing what you think of the treatment.
I've actually tried lots of super salon things in the past including Cathiodermie, microdermabrasion, and a 'gentle' Dermalogica peel.
That's probably why my skin is so sensitive now though! I was young, foolish, and had access to lots of fee Spa treatments.
It will be very hard to see a difference Tabs as your skin is so good in the first place!
Yep, three days of sugar, sunburn, crazy golf and the pleasure beach and car sickness on the way down.
DeleteThat is a holiday weekend that I will never ever forget.
Oh I'm all broken veins, now that I've been peering at my skin without make up I realise that I really need to sort them out sometime.
That sounds very interesting. Is it really so easy to use? I'm always a bit sceptical if something seems too good to be true!
ReplyDeleteIt's easy but until I see results I'm sceptical too, I still have a long way to go treatment wise but will report back.
DeleteWants and needs...oh I need one, but even if they were available in the US if I did my calculations correctly, I think it would be over $1,200. Too much unless the results are phenomenal...even then. I happen to have a derm appt. next week with a Doctor that was trained at UCI to use Fraxel laser...I'll be curious to see what she has to say. I hope you like the results...you look great before. Your post has certainly been informative and hilarious at the same time.

Udderly Smooth Giveaway
I am absolutely divided on this kind of thing, between, if it exists, works and is to our advantage we must use it. And wouldn't it be psychologically healthier just to give up our 'starring role',pass the mantle to the next generation and become a support act?
ReplyDeleteLoved all of the sweets plus flying saucers, shrimps and even black jacks (which I think with hindsight had pretty un PC packaging) Check out this link, it has everything....http://www.aquarterof.co.uk/whopping-retro-sweet-hamper-p-151106.html
Wow - that hamper is amazing!
DeleteI don't know, I have no next generation and all this is going to do is lessen very fine lines - maybe - it's hardly a full face lift. My problem is broken veins which has nothing to do with age, I'm all for self improvement within reason.
ReplyDeleteOh I still eat flying saucers and blackjacks!
Yep I'll change that has to have please.
DeleteYou are right I am just having one of those'too fat, too old, too grey, too cold weekends' where any sort of self improvement feels like hardwork and wallpapering over subsidence. I spent yesterday surrounded by impossibly beautiful, bouncy young things. I knew I was feeling old and tired when all I felt was sorry for them at how hard it is to navigate the modern world. To find what would make them satisfied (work? kids? friends? money?) and to find it while they still have all of the choices open to them.
ReplyDeleteBut enough of this morbidity, I want to try the ReAura and laser it all away. If nothing else I would relish a bit of sunburn!
Ah yes, I would like more choices, I feel that my life is concertina -ing in a little. There are many things which have passed now, oh well.
DeleteAnd boy would I love some sunburn, it's freezing here.
I'd love some of those flying saucers right now. Throw the sweety bag over this way! Are there any fruit salads left?
Deletethis look interesting, but the price is too much i think...
ReplyDeleteLila's results look wonderful. I could justify it if I felt I was repairing sun damage. That's the artificial line I'm drawing in my mind...
ReplyDeleteGosh woman, where are your wrinkles! I'm starting to develop a complex just looking at the last pic. I'm 9 years younger and my jowldom is rather fullblown. I'd love to try it but £799 is scary expensive.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck with this Tabitha...you are a very brave girl, and really, since only the beginging stages of 'jowldom' (I share in this misery, as well as the little pink spiders!) and neck folds, I'm sure it will at least do something good and be worth all the time and effort...hang in there, and thanks for sharing 'yourself' with us again, so bravely!
ReplyDeletexo J~
(I tried laser hair removal for a while and it stung pretty good, but only for a second...the problem was, that there were 500 seconds!)
